On this sightseeing excursion of Bangkok's canals, or klongs as they are known locally, you travel by motorised boat on the Chao Phraya River. You see the serene family homes and temples along the waterways that earned Bangkok the name "Venice of the East". The canals still serve as a natural highway for many local people going about their everyday business, such as transporting rice to and from the rice fields.

A stop is made at the beautifully decorated Temple of Dawn, Wat Arun, one of Bangkok's most iconic landmarks and the most famous of the city's more than 400 Buddhist temples and monasteries.

Then it is on to the Grand Palace complex, which includes the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew), carved from one piece of solid translucent jade. To round off the excursion, you call in at a local lapidary factory and showroom, where you can buy locally made jewellery, handicrafts and silk at competitive prices.
