A winding road up the hill overlooking the city brings you to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the most significant temple in Chiang Mai. The 600-year-old temple lies 3,500 feet above sea level. Inside is the symbol of the city, a copper-plated chedi topped by a five-tier gold parasol, which contains relics of the Lord Buddha. On a clear day the terrace offers a fine panoramic view of the whole city. The final climb up the 306 steps of the Naga staircase is well worth it, and a funicular is also available.

You then continue a further 18 kilometres up the mountain of Doi Pui to a White Hmong hill tribe village. Here the Hmong, in their colourful costumes, sell a wide range of antiques, decorative ornaments and fabrics. The villagers now earn their living by growing vegetables and fruit, which have replaced their traditional cash crop, the opium poppy.
