This is a good excursion to start your stay, giving you an overview of Chiang Mai and its more than 700 years of history. A winding road up the hill overlooking the city brings you to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the most significant temple in Chiang Mai, 600 years old and 3,500 feet above sea level. Inside is the symbol of the city, a copper-plated chedi topped by a five-tier gold parasol, which contains relics of the Lord Buddha. On a clear day the terrace offers a fine panoramic view of the whole city. The final climb up the 306 steps of the Naga staircase is well worth it, and a funicular is also available.

Back in the city, you see the King's flower garden temple, Wat Suan Dok, with its large central stupa, and Wat Chedi Luang, with its impressive chedi originally built in 1411.
