Among the must-see attractions in Thailand is Ayutthaya, the former capital, 76 kilometres north of Bangkok. Founded in 1350 by King U-Thong, it was the Thai capital for 417 years, ruled by 33 kings of 5 dynasties until it was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767. You also visit Bang Pa-In Summer Palace, the palace of the present Chakri dynasty.

Wat Sri Sanphet, an important and outstanding monastery, was used as a palace in the reign of King Ramathibodi I. Wat Mahathat, the Temple of the Great Relic, was one of the most important temples of the kingdom, with a huge central prang and many smaller chedis. Its highlight is the head of a Buddha image engulfed by the roots of a tree.

At Wat Yai Chaimongkhol, the chedi built by King Naresuan (1590-1605) is among the largest in Ayutthaya, with many Buddha images and a beautiful garden behind it. Lunch is included.
